Composting Facility

Green City

Mersin Metropolitan Municipality has established a Compost Production Facility to transform organic waste into valuable natural fertilizer, supporting both environmental sustainability and circular waste management. Located within the Sarıibrahimli Solid Waste Storage and Recovery Site, the facility processes daily organic materials such as fruit and vegetable residues, pruning waste, sawdust, and tea and coffee grounds. Through a natural biological decomposition process lasting approximately 2.5 to 3 months, these materials are converted into high-quality compost that improves soil structure, increases moisture retention, and enhances plant health. Since its operation began in 2024, the facility has produced more than 300 cubic meters of compost, with an annual target of 500 cubic meters.

The produced compost is primarily used in municipal landscaping, parks, and green areas, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers and minimizing the amount of organic waste sent to landfills. This project, implemented under the slogan “We Don’t Waste, We Compost”, reflects the Municipality’s commitment to sustainable urban management, climate responsibility, and environmental protection while contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals on responsible consumption, clean cities, and climate action.
