Mobile Library (KitoBüs)

Green City

Mersin Metropolitan Municipality Mobile Library, known locally through services like the “Kitobüs” (mobile library bus), is a key cultural outreach initiative that brings books and reading opportunities directly to communities throughout Mersin. Operated by the Municipality’s Culture and Social Affairs Department, this service aims to encourage reading habits and broaden access to literary resources for residents of all ages, especially children and young people.

The Kitobüs travels to different neighbourhoods, schools, and community locations, providing children and students the chance to explore a variety of books on site. During the 2023–2024 academic year, its first stop of the season was at a high school in the Toroslar district, where students were able to enjoy and examine books inside the mobile library environment. Staff from the Municipality report that the visits are well-received and contribute to promoting a culture of reading among young people.

In addition to schools, the mobile library also visits other community settings such as daycare centres, care homes, and correctional facilities to share books, foster reading interest, and support lifelong learning. The programme often includes presenting books as gifts to participants, helping to expand personal libraries and continuously engage readers beyond the mobile visit itself.

This travelling library model complements the Municipality’s broader library services, which include permanent library spaces where residents can access books, study areas, free internet, and other resources. Together, these services exemplify the Municipality’s commitment to ensuring equitable access to reading materials and promoting literacy across the city.
