Mercan 100th Year Climate and Environment Science Center, established by Mersin Metropolitan Municipality, is a next-generation learning and discovery space where science meets sustainability. Officially opened on November 1, 2023, by Mayor Vahap Seçer, the Center was created as a gift to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye. It aims to encourage children, youth, and adults to explore science, technology, and the environment through interactive learning experiences.
Mercan Science Center combines education, innovation, and environmental awareness under one roof. Visitors can explore more than 70 interactive exhibits, with expansion plans for up to 120, offering engaging content in physics, biology, energy, and sustainability. The Center also features one of Türkiye’s largest planetariums, providing immersive astronomy shows, and a modern observatory equipped with fixed, solar, and mobile telescopes. Themed exhibition zones highlight key topics such as climate change, renewable energy, and zero-waste practices, helping visitors understand the impact of human activity on the planet and the importance of sustainable living.
Educational programs at Mercan are designed to make science accessible and exciting for everyone. The Center offers hands-on workshops in Robotics and Coding, Astronomy, Environmental Awareness, and Young Inventors. School programs include a guided science tour and a planetarium show, offering a complete 80-minute learning experience. Mercan also welcomes families and individual visitors on weekends and provides free transportation for public schools across Mersin to ensure equal access to science education.
Since its opening, Mercan Science Center has attracted thousands of visitors and has become a landmark of innovation and environmental consciousness in Mersin. It serves as a hub for learning, creativity, and exploration, promoting the values of scientific thinking, innovation, and sustainability among all generations.
