Mersin Metropolitan Municipality City Theatre stands out as a vibrant cultural institution that significantly contributes to the artistic life of Mersin. Under the leadership and support of the municipality, the theatre has grown into a professional and impactful performing arts organization that engages audiences of all ages and strengthens the city’s cultural identity.
One of the most remarkable achievements of the City Theatre in recent years was its success at the International Mediterranean Theatre Awards, where it won two major honors: “Play of the Year” for the production Ben Anadolu and “Actor of the Year” for performer Ömür Sevgi Çil. This recognition highlights both the quality of the production and the exceptional talent within the theatre’s ensemble.
Throughout the 2024–2025 season, the City Theatre presented an impressive repertoire of plays that appealed to a wide audience. These included both classic and contemporary works such as Buzlar Çözülmeden, Lütfen Kızımla Evlenir misiniz?, Eyvah Nadir, Misafir, and Ben Anadolu, as well as several children’s productions. In total, the theatre staged nine different plays, bringing the joy of live performance to thousands of people across the city.
The theatre has made a strong commitment to cultural outreach and education. Through initiatives like the “Tiyatro Seyretmeyen Çocuk Kalmasın” (Let No Child Be Left Without Watching Theatre) project, the City Theatre brought performances to schools and community spaces, aiming to introduce children to the arts and foster a lifelong appreciation for theatre.
In addition, performances are not limited to central theatre venues: the company also participates in festivals and tours, expanding its reach and enhancing cultural exchange both regionally and beyond.
The City Theatre actively serves audiences of every generation. Its repertoire includes productions specifically designed for children, helping young people experience theatre in meaningful and engaging ways. This inclusive approach ensures that cultural participation is broad and diverse throughout the community.
